The Stanislaw Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdansk

The Academy of Music in Gdansk was founded in 1947 as the College of Music. It was the only Music Academy in northern Poland for a long time. Over 4000 students have graduated from the Academy so far. Amongst them, there are winners of prestigious competitions and prominent artists:
Zofia Janukowicz – the vocalist and winner of the International Music Competition in 's-Hertogenbosch, Jerzy Sulikowski – the pianist and winner of the International Music Competition in Geneva, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń – the pianist and outstanding teacher, Konstanty A. Kulka – the violinist and winner of the International Music Competition in Munich, Ewa Pobłocka – the pianist and laureate of the International Chopin competition in Warsaw; Stefania Toczyska – the vocalist and soloist of the world’s greatest opera stages; other well known vocalists – Piotr Kusiewicz, Bożena Harasimowicz-Haas, Ryszard Minkiewicz. Amongst the Academy graduates are also Włodzimierz Nahorny and Leszek Możdżer who have obtained a strong position on the Polish and international jazz scene.
Annually about 700 students study in all years and at 4 faculties:
- I – Composition, Conducting and Theory of Music
- II – Instrumental
- III – Vocal and Acting
- IV – Choral Conducting, Music Education and Rhythmics
The concert bureau of the Academy organizes about 160 concerts every year in the Academy facilities as well as outside – in domestic and foreign - concert halls. The Academic staff participates in over 800 concerts a year. 183 academic teachers give lectures at the Academy, amongst which 63 are senior staff, including 50 professors.
In the Erasmus European Union Programme the Academy cooperates with over 40 music universities from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey.
The Academy is a member of three international associations: The AEC – Association of European Conservatories, Higher Music Schools and Academies, ABAM which is an organization consisting of Music Academies from around the Baltic Sea and the EAS – European Association for Music in Schools, the European co-operation partner of ISME.
